About

Who are we?

Pop Seagull Publishing is a brand, spanking new indie e-book and print-on-demand publisher of fantasy, horror and science fiction stories, owned and operated by author Elizabeth Hirst. It was founded in May of 2011, when Miss Hirst decided that she needed to be the change that she wanted to see in book publishing, and explore new, electronic avenues of publication.

Liz’s Bio

Miss Hirst is a graduate of Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, with a Master’s Degree in English Literature. Her specialty is Victorian pulp literature and contemporary fantasy, and her final paper discussed the post-colonial implications of geography and space in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She is a graduate of the Odyssey Fantasy Writing Workshop, Class of 2006, and she cannot recommend this program enough to anyone who wants to bring their writing up to a professional level, and meet lots of other wonderful, creative people. Her work has appeared in Alien Skin Magazine, Mystic Signals 3 Anthology, and she also worked as a creative writer for the popular Facebook apps Mousehunt and Levynlight, while working for Hitgrab Inc. Liz is also a visual artist who is currently studying animation at Sheridan College in Oakville. The Pop Seagull Logo is her own design, and so are the cover layouts for all of her books, with the exception of her upcoming novel. In her spare time, Liz enjoys reading and talking (and talking, and talking) about books, playing video games, and feeding her fashion addiction. She also loves almost everything Disney.

  1. Hi Elizabeth (Liz),

Such a pleasure meeting you last night at the chamber event. I didn’t get a chance to ask you how you came up with the company name ‘Pop Seagull Publishing’.

We mentioned that Matt is now a tattoo artist @ Mattoo Tattoo and your husband should contact him for advise (the do’s and don’t’s) of becoming a tattoo artist.

You can reach him at dyck.ma@gmail.com and as you know already, his website is http://www.kiddika.net

Talk to you soon. Oh by the way do you have an e-mail address, other than leaving you a reply here?

  2. Hi Sarolta! It was a pleasure talking to you last night at the event… I’m actually going to do a blog post on it soon. As for the name, that’s a funny story in itself. It all comes from a pun my Dad made… you see, I wanted to come up with a name that was fun, and sort of represented what it is to live in this area of the world, and so one day this spring, during that interminable cold snap, Dad, Mum and I were driving past the steel company in Hamilton and despite the wind and bitter cold, there were a bunch of seagulls still flying around. I made a comment wondering why they could stand the cold, and Dad said that what I didn’t know was that they were really ‘Pop Seagulls’. I thought that was brilliant, and so when I wanted a name that reflected my playful nature, I thought of Dad’s pun and the company was officially named. As for my email, it’s . Thanks for checking out the blog! I hope you check back often. 🙂
